Bubba Gump- From Shrimp to Wages

Oct. 8, 2014

If you've seen the movie Forest Gump, the name Bubba Gump will remind you of one thing- shrimp. Bubba Gump has been in the news recently, though this time it's for more than just shrimp. Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. restaurants were involved in a lawsuit with an employee. The judge, in this case, ordered the company to pay a settlement to an employee who was denied overtime wages and forced to work when not on the clock.

The Fair Labor Standards Act protects workers and upholds standards of payment and work conditions. Click here to read more about the Wages and the Fair Labor Standards Act. Under the FLSA, the minimum wage is $7.25 per hour, as of July 2009. Remember, this is the federal standard, and many states have their own standard of minimum wages. An employee is entitled to the higher of the two standards, in cases where they are subject to both the state and federal wage standards. The FLSA also addresses the issue of overtime. Covered nonexempt employees must be paid overtime pay for any time worked over 40 hours per workweek. Unsure if you are covered under this provision?
